I’ve been finding Grammarly extremely useful for keeping an eye on my grammar when I write. However, once my half-price offer ended, it’s just way too expensive for what it is.

For that reason, I’m now trying LanguageTool instead. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I just finished writing my first blog post with LanguageTool and I wouldn’t say that it is better than Grammarly. In fact, there were a few rather dodgy “corrections”.

A couple of examples:

I wanted a non-Google, phone-snatching-preventing iPhone remote at a discount.

It wants to change “at a discount” to “discounted” 🤔

I would never send just “No” to someone, and offering to call someone later is just not present in my vocabulary.

It wants a period after “offering to”. That doesn’t make any sense!

I don’t remember getting this kind of nonsensical recommendations in Grammarly.

I wonder if Grammarly noticed that I uninstalled the app and they suddenly offered me a 50% discount. Either way, it brought the cost back down to what I feel is reasonable, so I cancelled LanguageTool.

To be fair to LanguageTool, their 2-week money-back guarantee worked exactly as promised, no questions asked, so I’d still encourage you to give them a go and make your own mind up if you’re looking for a Grammarly alternative 👍🏻
