I always enjoy Anish Kapoor’s art, and his latest exhibition was a treat.
Much of the theme this time was red blobs. A big inflated red blob filling most of a gallery and the one next to it. A big lava-like blob hanging from the ceiling. Other big red organic-looking ones in shrinkwrap.

Out on the balcony, there were two of his trademark big, bent mirrors, and those are always fascinating.
But what really caught my interest was a room with what at first sight seemed to be painted black shapes on flat white walls. Once you got closer, though, what looked like just a black ellipse painted on the wall turned out to be, in fact, part of a white half-sphere coming out of the wall. What looked like just a black square turned out to have a black ball hanging in front.
Again, I don’t think I’m doing it justice, but as far as optical illusions go, these were some of the more fascinating I’ve seen.
“I’ve never seen anything so totally black before”, I thought to myself, and it turned out to be true: the black Vantablack coating is apparently the blackest substance known to man. This was a very good use of it.
